Teach for America is giving its teachers mini-headsets so that they can get a classroom assist when the going gets tough. Pretend we made a football joke.
I’m a first year teacher, and there are a number of situations I face where I have to think on my feet and make judgment calls and I don’t know if I did the right thing. I most often go to my principal or my fellow teachers and ask for their advice. And yes, there are many days where I blow it, either in communicating content or classroom management. But I would be so incredibly thrown off if I had someone talking in my ear while I was teaching. I’d have to stop doing what I was doing and just listen to them, which would be more awkward and ineffective than whatever it was I was doing in the first place.
My opinion of the Gates Foundation couldn’t get much lower.
… head-sets? Really? I agree completely, snixie.
When I became a NYC Teaching Fellow, my assistant principal told me I was going through a “trail of fire”, a trail I’m still going through now. If I had a head-set on, not only would I be distracted, but also I would rely on a voice instead of my inner voice and the voices of experience all around me.
So. Much. Face-falls.
As a first year teacher, the only time I would want a headset is when I was grabbed by a student in my classroom. Like a call for back-up button. That’s about it thank you very much.
